We are here when you need us, even on Thanksgiving.

With Thanksgiving around the bend, we pulled this question from Megan L., as it seemed appropriate for the upcoming holiday.

Megan asks: With the holidays coming up, what are things I should be checking to make sure I don’t end up with a plumbing emergency on the day of dinner? One time I was at a surprise party and 30 minutes before the guest of honor showed up the hostess had to call a plumber because the toilets were backing up. Could this have been avoided?

Well Megan, you can’t avoid every emergency, but many times your drainage system will provide clues that all is not well below the floor. Slow flushing or high water levels in the toilet bowl, maybe even standing water or gurgling drain sounds (think of the sounds your stomach makes after some gas station tuna roll, Flaming Hot Cheetos all washed down with a Spicy V8.) Remember, with a mainline stoppage, the water will appear at the lowest part of the system, generally a shower or tub drain. It may come and go but don’t ignore it…something is happening down below, and like your belly after leaving the gas station, it’s not going to be good. If you do recognize some clues, or just want piece of mind, it’s cheap insurance to send a camera down the line to have a look, starting at around $200. Similar to a proctologist, but way less money and certainly more comfortable…with no nasty prep to drink!

No feminine products, tissue (Kleenex) or the ever popular flushable wipes, (that by the way are anything but flushable) should ever be put in the toilet. We are here when you need us, even on Thanksgiving.
